Position Summary

Village School Primary School is seeking a passionate and knowledgeable Auslan Teacher to join our team. This role is an exciting opportunity to contribute to the school's commitment to inclusive education by teaching Auslan to primary school students, helping them gain skills in non-verbal communication, cultural understanding, and language diversity. The successful candidate will work with students in Prep to Year 6, incorporating interactive, engaging, and age-appropriate Auslan lessons that inspire communication, and understanding of Deaf culture.

Key Responsibilities

·        Develop and Deliver Auslan Curriculum: Plan, prepare, and deliver Auslan lessons to primary students that align with the school’s inclusive philosophy and support language acquisition in a fun and accessible way. Lessons should introduce basic Auslan vocabulary, grammar, and conversational skills.

·        Promote Deaf Culture Awareness: Incorporate lessons on Deaf culture and the importance of Auslan within the Deaf community.

·        Collaborate with Classroom Teachers: Work closely with teachers to integrate Auslan into the broader curriculum where appropriate, including in storytelling, role-play, and daily classroom routines.

·        Engage Students in Creative Learning: Use storytelling, songs, role-playing, and interactive games to teach Auslan, making learning both educational and enjoyable for students.

·        Assess Student Progress: Monitor and evaluate students' progress in learning Auslan, providing feedback and support to ensure their continuous development.

·        Community Engagement: Work with school staff and parents to foster community interest in Auslan learning, promoting its benefits and opportunities within Village School’s educational philosophy.

Selection Criteria

·        Qualifications and Experience:

·       Certification or qualification in Auslan teaching or equivalent experience in Auslan education.

·       Experience teaching Auslan to children, preferably in a primary school setting, is highly regarded.

·        Auslan Proficiency:

·       Fluency in Auslan, with the ability to teach basic to intermediate levels in a way that is accessible for primary-aged students.

·        Interpersonal Skills:

·       Strong communication skills and the ability to engage young learners in Auslan. A passion for teaching Auslan and sharing Deaf culture in an inclusive, respectful manner.

·        Creativity and Flexibility:

·       Ability to adapt lessons to fit the needs of students across various age groups and learning styles. Familiarity with creative methods like role-play, games, and storytelling to enrich the learning experience.

·        Cultural Awareness:

·       A strong understanding of Deaf culture and the importance of Auslan within the Deaf community.

·        Teamwork:

·       Willingness to collaborate with teachers and school staff to integrate Auslan into the school’s curriculum and daily routines.

·        Child Safety Commitment:

·       Demonstrated understanding and commitment to child safety, with a strong understanding of child protection principles. The successful candidate must uphold Village School’s Child Safe Standards, ensuring a secure and respectful environment for all students.
