*This role is a fixed term contract beginning the week of 17 August 2026 until the end of Term 4 2027 due to maternity leave. As a college that is growing, the option of longer-term employment is highly possible beyond the initial contracted dates.
Introduction
Lyrebird College is an independent school in Coldstream in the Yarra Ranges, that pursues excellence in the education of children with an Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) from foundation to year 10.
Lyrebird College teachers will work collaboratively with education support staff and therapists utilising the principles and strategies of Applied Behaviour Analysis (ABA) to deliver learning programs within the Victorian Curriculum framework. Personal attributes and skills
· Passion for educating early primary students with an Autism Spectrum Disorder.

Qualifications and training
· Teaching Degree
· Current or provisional registration as a teacher with the Victorian Institute of Teaching (VIT).
· First aid certificate or be willing to obtain one.

Role Description
The Classroom Teacher will share a grade at Lyrebird College and will have the opportunity to work with a team of educators and allied health specialists to create an engaging, individualised and age appropriate program for the students. The teacher will actively ensure the provision of quality teaching for students with an Autism Spectrum Disorder including the planning, delivery and evaluation through the Victorian Curriculum.
The key roles of the classroom teacher may include but are not limited to:
• Plan and implement teaching strategies in line with the Victorian Curriculum.
• Teach the agreed curriculum to the allocated class of students.
• Implement Applied Behavioural Analysis strategies for children with an Autism Spectrum Disorder.
• Develop and implement functional assessments and analysis.
• Develop individual learning programs for students.
• Implement and supervise individual learning programs.
• Contribute as an effective team member in a high performing team environment.
• Support and manage integration aides as part of the learning team.
• Monitor, evaluate and report student progress in key learning areas.
• Implement strategies to achieve targets related to student learning outcomes.
• Implement behaviour intervention plans and strategies.
• Integrate the use of research-based curriculum and assessment tools as per the school schedule.
• Work with parents to achieve an exemplary home-school partnership focused on the development of the child.
• Provide a child safe environment in line with the child safe standards and the ethos of the College.
• Maintain records of class attendance and recording student progress.
• Supervise a range of student activities including support and welfare programs.
• Contribute to a range of co-curricular programs.
The Classroom Teacher will work with the Principal, other teachers, staff, parents, students and the broader College community to help build an inspiring collective vision and contribute to the ongoing development of the College.

Working days are Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday, Friday.

Contract Dates
Start term 3 2026 (17.8.26)
End of term 4 2027 (17.12.27)
Salary and Conditions
Salary will be negotiated with the successful candidate commensurate with experience and skills.

A probationary period applies during the first six months of employment and induction and support programs provided.
Vaccination requirements
For positions in special education settings, a person is not eligible for employment unless they meet the vaccination requirements on commencement in the position.

The name “Lyrebird College” was chosen for our school not only because the Lyrebird is native to the Yarra Ranges but because a number of the traits the Lyrebird exhibits are mirrored in many people with an Autism Spectrum Disorder.
Lyrebirds are natural mimics which is one of the first skills all children are taught, and mimicry is a vital skill for all children with an ASD to learn. This can be in the form of echolalia or the imitating of movie scripts and turning them into their own conversations. A Lyrebird will create a cacophony of complex sounds from those around them such as a laugh from a kookaburra, a song from a magpie or even a chainsaw. It then fashions these sounds into its own unique song. This uniqueness is also aligned with people with an ASD.
Lyrebirds are known for being socially shy and difficult to see in the wild. They keep to themselves and just like some people with an ASD, they prefer their own space.
