Senior Grounds Officer

  • Camberwell Grammar School

Job Description

ABOUT US

Camberwell Grammar School is an independent Anglican day school for boys from Pre-Preparatory to Year 12. We aim to give every student in our care the very best possible education in order to prepare them for life beyond school. We are a learning community, which encourages staff, students, past students and parents to involve themselves fully in all aspects of school life and to identify themselves with its values: Learning, Respect, Integrity, Courage and Optimism. We are proud of the warm spirit and sense of community that characterises our school family.

Our School campus is located in the leafy inner east suburb of Canterbury, on land originally inhabited by the Wurundjeri People of the Kulin Nation, and blends period architecture with exciting contemporary design and state-of-the-art facilities.

ABOUT THE ROLE

As our Senior Grounds Officer, you will play a key role in maintaining the presentation, safety and functionality of the School’s gardens and grounds. This hands-on leadership position combines horticultural expertise with team supervision, ensuring the campus remains an attractive and welcoming environment for students, staff and visitors.

Working closely with the Facilities and Grounds Coordinator, you will plan and deliver daily operational activities, manage work schedules and contribute to minor landscaping projects. You will also provide direct supervision, mentoring and support to the Grounds Officers, fostering a collaborative and high-performing team culture.

This role is responsible for delivering high-quality gardening and grounds maintenance across the School, including plant care, irrigation, turf support and landscape improvements. You will also ensure all work is completed in line with Occupational Health and Safety requirements, maintaining a strong focus on safe work practices, compliance and risk management.

In addition, you will contribute to the long-term development of the School’s outdoor spaces by supporting sustainable planting initiatives and maintaining accurate records, including tree asset management systems.

This is a full time, ongoing position, inclusive of the school holiday periods, commencing in June 2026, at a time mutually agreed with the successful candidate.

ABOUT YOU

You are an experienced and motivated horticultural professional with a passion for creating and maintaining high-quality outdoor environments. With a strong background in grounds or garden management, you bring both technical expertise and leadership capability to the role.

You have demonstrated experience supervising or mentoring staff, with the ability to allocate work effectively and maintain high standards across a team. Your hands-on skills span all aspects of garden and grounds maintenance, including plant health, irrigation systems, turf management and minor landscaping works.

You are highly organised and proactive, with the ability to manage competing priorities, respond to maintenance requests and identify opportunities for improvement. Your strong communication skills enable you to work collaboratively with colleagues, contractors and the broader school community.

Safety is a priority in everything you do. You have a thorough understanding of OH&S requirements, including the safe use of equipment, chemicals and machinery, and you are confident in maintaining compliance within a school environment.

Knowledge & Skills

  • Significant experience in a horticultural, grounds or similar role, ideally within a large or complex site.
  • Technical Literacy: Proficiency in Microsoft Office suite and IT-based scheduling/work order software.

Qualifications

  • Diploma or higher in Horticulture or Parks and Garden Maintenance (essential).
  • General Construction Induction Card (White Card) (essential).
  • Current Australian Driver’s Licence (essential).
  • Heavy Rigid (HR) License (highly desirable for larger machinery operation) (desirable).
  • Current Chainsaw Operation license/certification (essential).
  • Current Elevating Work Platform (EWP) license (Yellow Card or WP Class High Risk Work License) (essential or willing to obtain).
  • Current Working with Children Check (essential).
