Sustainability Engagement Officer

  • Camberwell Grammar School

Job Description

ABOUT US

Camberwell Grammar School is an independent Anglican day school for boys from Pre-Preparatory to Year 12. We aim to give every student in our care the very best education in order to prepare them for life beyond school. We are a learning community, which encourages staff, students, past students and parents to involve themselves fully in all aspects of school life and to identify themselves with its values: Learning, Respect, Integrity, Courage and Optimism. We are proud of the warm spirit and sense of community that characterises our school family.

Our school campus is located in the leafy inner east suburb of Canterbury, on land originally inhabited by the Wurundjeri People of the Kulin Nation, and blends period architecture with exciting contemporary design and state-of-the-art facilities.

ABOUT THE ROLE

The Sustainability Engagement Officer plays an important role in bringing the school’s sustainability priorities to life through practical projects, student leadership and community engagement. This is a hands-on, school-based role focused on inspiring students to take an active part in caring for the environment and creating positive, lasting change.

Working closely with the school’s award-winning, established and highly active sustainability team, you will coordinate and mentor student sustainability initiatives, support food-growing gardens, composting and biodiversity projects, and help students explore sustainability through practical activities across the school grounds. You will be joining a school with a strong and demonstrated commitment to sustainability, where environmental initiatives are actively embedded in school life and supported by an engaged school community.

We are committed to achieving Net Zero by 2030, reducing emissions and our environmental impact and engaging our community in creating a greener future.

You will also coordinate sustainability events, campaigns and environmental audits, including Green/Sustainability Week, Clean Up and National Tree Day activities. Building relationships with local councils, community organisations, parents and other stakeholders will be an important part of connecting students with wider environmental initiatives and sharing the school’s sustainability achievements.

This is a varied role for someone who enjoys working with young people, turning ideas into action and making sustainability engaging, accessible and meaningful across the school community.

This is a permanent, part-time (FTE: 0.6) position, commencing in January 2027, working 22.8 hours per week throughout school terms and school holiday periods. The successful candidate will have the flexibility to nominate their preferred working days, with hours ideally spread across four or five days per week, or across three days per week if preferred.

ABOUT YOU

You are enthusiastic about sustainability and enjoy finding practical, engaging ways to involve students and the wider community in environmental initiatives. You bring a positive, collaborative approach and are confident encouraging students to develop ideas, take ownership of projects and work together towards shared goals.

You have practical experience in areas such as gardening, food growing, composting, biodiversity or waste reduction, together with the ability to organise projects, coordinate events and bring sustainability campaigns to life. You are comfortable working with a range of people, building relationships with community partners and communicating ideas through activities, displays and written or digital content.

Well organised and proactive, you can manage competing priorities while remaining flexible and hands-on. You understand the importance of safe practices when working with students, outdoor environments and practical activities, and are motivated by the opportunity to make a meaningful contribution to the school community.

Knowledge & skills

  • Understanding of school-based sustainability practices, including waste minimisation, composting, energy and water efficiency, biodiversity and environmental audits.

  • Experience planning and coordinating events, workshops, campaigns and community activities.
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills, including the ability to develop partnerships with community organisations and local councils.
  • Ability to prepare engaging content, displays and stories for school publications and digital platforms.
  • Good organisational skills, initiative and the ability to manage projects independently.
  • Understanding of safe work practices relevant to outdoor activities, student engagement and events.
  • Familiarity with the ResourceSmart Schools framework and sustainability initiatives such as waste reduction, Net Zero and climate resilience would be beneficial.

Qualifications

  • Relevant Qualification: Degree, Diploma or Certificate in Environmental Science, Sustainability, Environmental Education, Community Development, Horticulture, Education or a related field.
  • Relevant Experience: Demonstrated experience in a school, youth organisation, local council or community-based environmental setting.
  • First Aid: Current First Aid qualification.
