Head of Music

  • Camberwell Grammar School

Job Description

ABOUT US

Camberwell Grammar School is an independent Anglican day school for boys from Pre-Preparatory to Year 12. We aim to give every student in our care the very best possible education in order to prepare them for life beyond school. We are a learning community, which encourages staff, students, past students and parents to involve themselves fully in all aspects of school life and to identify themselves with its values: Learning, Respect, Integrity, Courage and Optimism. We are proud of the warm spirit and sense of community that characterises our school family.

Our school campus is located in the leafy inner east suburb of Canterbury, on land originally inhabited by the Wurundjeri People of the Kulin Nation, and blends period architecture with exciting contemporary design and state-of-the-art facilities.

ABOUT THE ROLE

We are seeking an experienced, inspiring and highly collaborative Head of Music to lead our flourishing and extensive Music Department in a progressive, supportive and well resourced educational environment.

Working alongside a talented and dedicated team of music educators and professionals, you will provide clear, thoughtful and collaborative leadership across the department, supporting staff to deliver an outstanding music education and ensuring that the breadth and quality of our established programs continue to thrive.

This is an important leadership role within a dynamic and highly regarded department. You will bring a strong understanding of contemporary music education, together with the organisational, interpersonal and leadership capabilities required to support a large team and a complex program of curricular, co-curricular and performance activities. You will foster a culture of professionalism, respect, collaboration and shared purpose, while providing clear direction, thoughtful support and opportunities for staff to develop and contribute.

The successful candidate will have the ability to balance strategic thinking with effective day-to-day management, ensuring that systems, communication and processes support the effective operation of the department and enable staff and students to flourish. You will build on the department’s existing strengths, ensuring its programs remain purposeful, sustainable and aligned with the broader educational priorities of the school.

This is a full time (FTE 1.0) permanent ongoing position, commencing in Term 1, 2027.

ABOUT YOU

You are a passionate, outstanding educator and experienced leader who can lead by example and model exceptional practice. You are an accomplished music professional with excellent knowledge of contemporary music education and a genuine enthusiasm for creating opportunities for students to engage, perform and develop through music.

Importantly, you are a people centred leader who understands that the success of a large department depends on strong relationships, clear communication and a shared sense of purpose. You have the interpersonal skills, emotional intelligence and professional maturity to lead a diverse team with respect, fairness and empathy, while also providing the clarity, accountability and direction necessary for a high performing department.

You will be an approachable and empowering leader who builds trust, brings people together and creates an environment in which staff feel valued, supported and able to do their best work. You will encourage professional autonomy and initiative while establishing consistent expectations, effective communication and cohesive ways of working across the department.

Crucially, you are a whole school team player who leads with a broad, interconnected perspective. You recognise that the Music Department thrives best as an active, integrated part of the broader educational environment. You bring a collegiate mindset that values cross-departmental collaboration, shared resources, and meaningful partnerships with other areas to support a unified vision for student learning and wellbeing.

You will also have:

  • Relevant teaching qualifications in Music Education.
  • Current Teacher Registration with the Victorian Institute of Teaching (VIT).
  • Substantial experience in music education, with a strong understanding of contemporary music pedagogy and curriculum.
  • Anaphylaxis training certification.
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills with demonstrated capacity to develop positive and professional relationships with staff, students, parents and the broader school community.
  • Outstanding planning and organisational skills coupled with adaptability to deal with the unexpected and the ability to manage competing priorities effectively.
  • Demonstrated leadership and people management experience, with the ability to support, develop and bring together a large and diverse team.
  • The capacity to establish clear expectations, systems and processes that support effective collaboration, communication and accountability.
  • Experience leading or contributing to a broad music program encompassing classroom music, instrumental tuition, ensembles, performances and co-curricular activities.
  • A strategic and forward thinking approach, with the ability to build on the department’s existing strengths, ensure its ongoing effectiveness and identify opportunities for thoughtful development where appropriate.
  • Experience in the delivery of pastoral, academic and co-curricular programs and fostering a dynamic learning community committed to the development of the whole person.
  • Alignment with our values and a desire to contribute to a collaborative, sustainable, and welcoming campus community.
