Head of English

  • Camberwell Grammar School

Job Description

ABOUT US

Camberwell Grammar School is an independent Anglican day school for boys from Pre-Preparatory to Year 12. We aim to give every student in our care the very best possible education in order to prepare them for life beyond school. We are a learning community, which encourages staff, students, past students and parents to involve themselves fully in all aspects of school life and to identify themselves with its values: Learning, Respect, Integrity, Courage and Optimism. We are proud of the warm spirit and sense of community that characterises our school family.

Our school campus is located in the leafy inner east suburb of Canterbury, on land originally inhabited by the Wurundjeri People of the Kulin Nation, and blends period architecture with exciting contemporary design and state-of-the-art facilities.

ABOUT THE ROLE

We are seeking an experienced, inspiring and highly collaborative Head of English to lead our English faculty across the Middle and Senior School, in a progressive, supportive and well-resourced educational environment.

Working alongside a committed and experienced team of educators, you will provide clear, thoughtful and collaborative leadership that supports high quality teaching, strengthens curriculum practice and inspires a shared commitment to excellence in English education. You will bring the team together around a clear sense of purpose, establishing strong communication, effective systems and a consistent approach to teaching and learning across the faculty.

A key focus of the role will be to provide clear curriculum leadership and direction, ensuring that programs, resources and assessment practices are well organised, purposeful and aligned with the school’s educational priorities. You will work collaboratively with teachers to develop and refine high quality resources and establish clear expectations around curriculum delivery, while ensuring that staff have the support, tools and professional autonomy they need to succeed.

This is an important leadership role within a dynamic faculty. You will have the organisational capability to bring structure and coherence to the department’s systems and processes, together with the interpersonal skills and emotional intelligence to lead a team with warmth, respect and professionalism. You will foster a culture of trust, collaboration and shared accountability, encouraging staff to contribute their expertise while providing the clarity and direction necessary to ensure the faculty operates cohesively and effectively.

The successful candidate will have a strong understanding of contemporary English education and curriculum, including VCE English, and will play an important role in shaping curriculum development, supporting professional growth and ensuring consistency and excellence in teaching and learning across the faculty.

This is a full time (FTE 1.0) permanent ongoing position, commencing in Term 1, 2027.

In addition, all teaching staff are required to participate in one season of the AGSV Sports Program, either through coaching or managing a sporting team, as part of their broader responsibilities at Camberwell Grammar School. This role also involves additional co-curricular responsibilities, including Year Level Camps and the Friday Activities Program, and encompasses pastoral care responsibilities.

ABOUT YOU

You are a passionate, outstanding educator and highly effective people leader who can lead by example and model exceptional practice. You are an expert in your field with excellent knowledge of current curriculum approaches and sound teaching practices, and you have the ability to inspire others through your enthusiasm for English education and your commitment to continuous improvement.

You are a personable, approachable and emotionally intelligent leader who understands that strong teams are built on trust, respect and shared purpose. You have the confidence to provide clear direction and establish high expectations, while leading collaboratively and ensuring that staff feel valued, supported and empowered to contribute their expertise.

You are highly organised and purposeful in your approach, with the ability to bring clarity and structure to curriculum, resources, systems and processes. You can identify what needs to be prioritised, establish practical and sustainable ways of working, and support a team to implement them consistently. You lead from behind - creating the conditions for others to succeed, recognising and drawing on the strengths of individuals, and galvanising the team around a common vision.

You will also have:

  • Relevant teaching qualifications.
  • Current Teacher Registration with the Victorian Institute of Teaching (VIT).
  • Substantial experience teaching English, including VCE English.
  • Anaphylaxis training certification.
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills with demonstrated capacity to build strong and respectful relationships with students, staff and parents.
  • Outstanding planning and organisational skills, with the ability to establish effective systems, manage competing priorities and respond constructively to the unexpected.
  • Demonstrated leadership and people management experience, with the ability to bring together the strengths and expertise of colleagues, foster collaboration and build a cohesive team culture.
  • A strong understanding of curriculum development, contemporary pedagogy, assessment and moderation, with the ability to provide clear curriculum direction and ensure consistency of practice across a faculty.
  • Experience developing, reviewing and maintaining high quality curriculum resources and materials that support teachers to deliver engaging and consistent programs.
  • A commitment to professional learning and continuous improvement, with the ability to support and develop colleagues through constructive feedback, collaboration and shared practice.
  • Experience in the delivery of pastoral, academic and co-curricular programs and fostering a dynamic learning community committed to the development of the whole person.
  • Alignment with our values and a desire to contribute to a collaborative, sustainable, and welcoming campus community.
